A Casting Directors Take: “What Makes an Acting Headshot Stand Out?”
Example of a Character and Dramatic Headshots
Alright, time to spill the beans on headshots. Working as a Casting Director in South Florida for more then a decade I can tell you I've seen more headshots than anyone could possibly count and let me tell you, the ones that stand out.. The ones that clients keep picking back up… the ones that make it to the ‘hero’ pile - tend to have a few things in common. So, if you're an actor looking to make a splash, here's some tips on what makes a headshot pop:
1. Authenticity:
Some of the best headshots are ones that let your true colors shine through. They capture the essence of who you are, not just what you look like. So, when it's time for your close-up, remember to keep it real!
2. Professionalism is Key:
A professional headshot tells me and a client that you're serious about your craft. It shows you've invested time and effort into presenting yourself in the best possible light. So, leave the selfies for your social media and get a pro to do the job.
3. Crystal Clear:
A great headshot is all about clarity. Your eyes should be the focal point, drawing the viewer in. And remember, less is more. Avoid busy backgrounds or props that could steal the spotlight from you!
4. Keep it Current:
Your headshot should look like you right now. Not you, 2 years ago. If your headshot doesn't match your current look, it's time for an update. This is a point a lot of agents will drive home time and time again - keep your headsets up to date!
5. The Right Expression:
Your expression should match the types of roles you're aiming for. If you're the next comedy lead, a friendly, approachable smile might be your go-to. A more serious expression could be the ticket if you're going for an intense drama role. Remember, there is No “1 Perfect Headshot” a perfect headshot is whichever one you choose to get this role. Not the last role you got or the next one but the one you use now on this audition.
So who will YOU be today? Have fun and good luck!
